I was in the beauty shop the other day. I know I'm a natural beauty, but every now and again, even we naturals need a trim. Anyhow, the lady working her magic on me relayed her recent experience at a nearby mall.
She and her daughter were finished shopping and were walking across the parking lot when a commotion caught their attention. It appeared these ladies (black) were walking from their car to the mall entrance. A woman (white) in a pickup truck had backed out of her parking space and was trying to leave. The women were in the middle of the driving area and would not move to one side to allow the car to pass. Out of frustration, a situation we all find ourselves in from time to time, the woman in the vehicle honked her horn. Big mistake!
The walking women stopped dead in their tracks, turned around and let the woman in the pickup have it. One lady began pointing her finger at the driver and said, "We ain't moving. We got every right to walk right here." As rude as this was, I can live with it, but what they said next floored me.
"You white people are just mad at us 'cause our man won and yours didn't. You white people are gonna be sorry when our man, Obama gets in office."
The women turned around and continued to mosey their way to the mall, still not allowing the woman in the pickup to go around them until they reached the end of the row of cars.
Now, if the shoe was on the other foot, and the roles reversed, the NAACP would have swooped down on me like ugly on a stick for being racist and using racial overtones. Give me a break.
Now, I don't know about you, but I get tired of the "race card" being thrown in my face. I'm not a racist, but I'm damn sure tired of blacks using it's a "black thing, you wouldn't understand."
I really don't understand why we can all live peacefully under one flag.
Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009, this United States of America will make history by inaugurating our first black president. Why can't he just be our president? Martin Luther King, Jr. said he dreamed of a day when people would be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin.
I'm going to support my president when he does the right thing. I'll probably complain when he does something I find disagreeable. I'll probably laugh at him when he does something totally stupid. But, I will do all of these because he was right, because he was wrong, and because he was stupid, not because he's black. He's simply human.
I look forward to a new year under a new president. I trust My Corner of the World 's going to be a better place in the years to come. I'm gonna put my trust in Obama until he proves I can't trust him. And, that's just a 'human thing,' and many of you ain't gonna understand it.
Until next time, Littledoggie!
